History of the Carolina Emergency Response Massage Team (CERMT)
|
| 1998 |
CERMT was formed with the help of Warren Moore from the North
Carolina Emergency Management Office. |
| 1999 |
September,
during Hurricane's Dennis and Floyd, CERMT members gave over 500
Massages to emergency responders and National Guard personnel. CERMT
become a member of the NC State Emergency Response Team and the NC
Critical Incident Stress Management Advisory Council. |
2001
2002 |
The
team responds to the attack on the World Trade Center in New York
City, giving over 3,500 massages to FDNY, NYPD, PAPD and other
emergency responders. Massage Therapists from Alaska, Pennsylvania,
Delaware, California, Florida, New York, Minnesota, and the United
Kingdom joined up with CERMT. From this, New York, Alaska, Delaware
and the United Kingdom have formed their own Emergency Response
Massage Teams. |
| 2003 |
January,
team members respond to the Pharmaceutical explosion in Kinston, NC
working with the Red Cross and the Salvation Army on site.
September, CERMT
members respond to Hurricane Isabel in eastern North Carolina and
staffed the Emergency Operations Center in Raleigh. |
| 2004
|
February the South
Carolina Chapter of CERMT is formed. With this addition CERMT becomes
the largest, most active independent Emergency Response Massage Team
in the US.
September/October the team deploys to WNC after Hurricanes Frances and
Ivan to work with Emergency Responders in the Buncombe, Jackson,
Macon, Haywood and Raleigh EOCs and at the site of Peakes Creek
landslide. Team members also manned the FEMA Joint Field Office in
Asheville.
